A NEW era has begun at Selby’s The Malt Shovel pub.
Landlords Doug and Christine Hewitt opened the doors on the newly-refurbished drinking hole in Ousegate on December 23.
The former Highwayman’s Tavern has been restored to its original name and Doug is already enjoying a steady trade as regulars and families rediscover the pub.
Telecoms engineer Doug said: “We’ve previously had shares in a bar in Spain but this is the first time we’ve actually run a pub ourselves.
“We wanted something for the family so they’d have an investment for the future.”
Father-of-three Doug, 59, has got his sons Craig (also left), 35, Simon, 32, and 28-year-old Daniel helping out where they can. The family spent much of November and December redecorating the pub, which has been boarded-up for about six months.
Doug and Christine, married 36 years with three grandchildren, have plans for various additions to the pub, including children’s play area outside.
They also hope to introduce regular guest ales and they are working on re-fitting the kitchen with hopes to eventually put on food, starting with Sunday lunches.
Doug added: “If anyone has any old pictures of the building, I’d love people to bring them in.” (L4663TS) Picture: Tony Saxton

Friday, February 24, 2012 at 08:39 AMCongraulations to Doug and Christine I wish them all the best. At last the makings of a decent real ale house in Selby. Last Saturday night both the Londesborough, and the Griffin had run out of real ale. The New Inn, and the Cricketers came to our rescue. Maybe I've been spoiled in the past, but I'm afraid the real ale scene in Selby leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not a big lover of wetherspoons', but if they finally open a pub in Selby, they won't have any serious competion. Bring it on.
