Fatal traction revisited

THIS ONE is for the traction engine fans.

Here we have the Fowler two speed, compound Road Locomotive, Lady Betty.

She was built and delivered to John Smiths Brewery Tadcaster in 1902. This was a non-standard order in such as she had her front axle set back and metal rubbing plates riveted on the undersides of her boiler to give her a short turning circle in public house yards.

In later life she spent a short while as a Showman’s Engine for Chris Johnson, as another photo I have of her shows her at Hull Fair. Her next owners were agricultural contractors, Bakers of Kellington who kept her until the early 1960’s.

She has had a mixed fortune since then as a Road Locomotive renamed Perdita for a while and finally back to a Showman’s.

Her name Lady Betty is attributed to a young lass hitching a drawbar ride and falling under the brewery trailer, and the other version has it Chris Johnson’s wife fell under a wheel.
