THE FUNERAL of well know local farmer John Huddlestone took place at St Wilfrid’s Church in Brayton last week.
John, who was better known as Jack, was brought through the town in a glass carriage drawn by two black horses – as he had requested to his daughter Pauline Bowerbank.
Jack farmed land at Brayton, Whitley Bridge and Goole amongst other places and he continued to work until he was 84-years-old, also driving until he was 94.
He spent his final days at Connaught Court care home in Fulford.
Mrs Bowerbank told Selby Times: “It was a sad day but we tried to also make it into a celebration – a celebration of an amazing life and an amazing character.

“Everyone has different memories of Jack, some of them funny - perhaps some of them sad, certainly many will have known of his love of fishing and shooting.
“Some may also know of his love of poetry and how he loved to recite his favourite poems by heart. Many will have known of his strong-mindedness, his determination to succeed, and his true desire to make a better life for his family.
“I’m not going to pretend for a minute that we didn’t have our ups and downs, our battles, our rough and tough times – but through all of that he was there for us: he bought us ponies; he taught my brother to fish and to shoot; he took us on caravanning holidays – and, he taught us the importance of a clean pair of shoes!”
She added: “Jack Huddlestone had a lifetime’s devotion to farming, and he certainly made a great success of it, in fact he made a success of everything he did.
“Towards the end of his life he decided to move from Brayton to Connaught Court, the Masonic Residential Home in York.
“He was truly happy with his move and made friends, as he always did, very quickly; he certainly amused everyone with his continuous supply of jokes.
“I want, very much, to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Connaught Court from the bottom of my heart for the kindness, support and genuine affection they have shown to both my father and to our family.”
