Jobs threat at Rank Hovis
JOBS at Selby’s Rank Hovis site could be under threat as owners Premier Foods announce plans to reduce their UK workforce by five per cent.
The Mr Kipling to Hovis firm said it plans to cut 600 jobs in a bid to save £40 million by next year.
It’s expected that the jobs that will go will be mainly administrative roles across the business – with the manufacturing sites, like the one in Barlby Road, not expected to bear the brunt of any staff cuts.
Premier also has a Manor Bakeries site in Barnsley and a Hovis site in Bradford. No single site will take the bulk of the losses, although there will be head office redundancies in St Albans.
The debt-laden group, which has been given extra time by its banks to get its finances in order, wants to reinvest the savings in growing its eight key brands, which include Batchelors, Ambrosia, Oxo and Bisto.
It will double marketing spend behind these brands, starting with TV adverts for Sharwood’s and Lloyd Grossman.
The company has been fighting for survival in recent months as profits plummet as a result of weak consumer demand.
