INSPIRATIONAL South Axholme School pupil Megan Kershaw is linking with her mum in the promotion of a special book, in the lead up to Christmas.

Year 11 pupil Megan, 15, spent four years fighting a rare liver cancer, but despite that very difficult period when she was unable to do her studies, returned to school in year ten and gained four early GCSEs, including maths and English.

Her mum Debbie, along with friend Rachel, who she met at Sheffield Children’s Hospital where Megan received treatment, launched a charity book - Once a Sprout Always a Sprout or Maybe Not - in 2009, after Rachel lost her three-year old daughter Lu Lu to cancer.

Sales of the sprout recipes boomed, and Debbie has just handed another £250 to hospital charity PACT, that works towards helping children with cancer and leukaemia. So far their sale figures have topped £8,000.

But they have set their target firmly at £10,000 and Megan, along with Rachel’s new baby Stanley, is keen to help them reach their goal.

Megan is also currently helping to narrate a production of Blood Brothers as part of her GCSE drama exam and has already started getting involved in next year’s Aurora charity fashion show in Doncaster.

Debbie, 48, of Misson, said: “Megan’s taking things steadily and is busy with her school work, but she really wants to help promote the book further to reach that magical £10,000 and we have some events planned nearer Christmas. She is inspirational in everything - so much so that I feel we sometimes all forget just how much she has gone through.”

Orders for the book have come as far away as Canada, New York and Australia. It costs £5 and is available at www.onceasprout.com
