A CHARITY-minded pair of friends in Rawcliffe have gone bananas and swung into action to help their local community during the summer holidays.

Calling themselves the Mexican Monkeys as part of the annual Humberside Police Lifestyle Project, Ben Lapish and Rory Kershaw, both aged 11, have been tidying up and enhancing their surroundings in Rawcliffe.

The pair, who left Rawcliffe Primary School at the end of term and this week move on to The Snaith School, had a ‘green’ theme to their efforts.

They have been among hundreds of enthusiastic Green Crusaders to have formed teams as part of Lifestyle in conjunction with the Environment Agency’s GreenScene Award, with the aim of not only improving their local communities, but to take part in sustainable green projects.

Adult supervisor, Tony Kershaw, explained: “They have worked really hard, clearing a stretch of footpath on the entry to the village, tidying up the village green and clearing leaves from the bus shelter on the green”

As if all this wasn’t enough, the lads had, he said, also cleared weeds from around the village hall and carried out gardening tasks for elderly residents of the village.

“They also raided my recycled wood pile to make a bird table and planters to be placed around the village hall. This is the only outdoor space for the village playgroup and they have agreed to look after them as it gives the children a chance of an outdoor activity.”

The pair have now moved into campaigning mode, said Tony, explaining that they were hoping to get a cycle route between Goole and Rawcliffe created.

“Ben’s dad Richard and I accompanied the boys on a bike ride and we discovered there is an old track there already, set back from the road and all surfaced but overgrown and unused,” said Tony.

“Ben and Rory are now writing to our local councillors, Goole Town Council, Rawcliffe Parish Council and East Riding Council to see if the track can be re-instated.”
