MORE than 200 trees will be planted in Old Goole to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

St Mary’s Church Committee has been given the trees, which include birch, ash, cherry, rowan, hazel and oak varieties from the Royal estate. They will be known as ‘The Queen’s Trees’.

The committee is already working in partnership with Marshlands Primary School and Manor Cottage on the project.

Justin Lancaster, of the committee, said: “We want local children to get on board helping with the planting so that they can look back in years to come and say ‘I planted that’.

“We want people to feel that they can take an active part in improving their community and gain pride from it.”

South Park is also set to take on a number of trees to add to its already diverse collection. An oak tree that was grown at the Queen’s Windsor residence will be one addition.

The project is also set to receive a parcel of Scotch pine trees as a personal gift to Old Goole from the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

Mr Lancaster said: “While on holiday in Scotland last year, I happened to talk to an estate manager about Old Goole, St Mary’s and what we hope to do in 2012. Upon returning home I received a telephone call asking if we would like to have several of these majestic trees to add to our project. I did not hesitate in saying yes.”

Villages with a link to Old Goole will receive a tree from the committee. Airmyn is one of the first villages to receive one.
