Business as usual

Insp Richard Abbott.

Insp Richard Abbott.

WELL the turkey should just about have been eaten by now, although a mountain of chocolates from Christmas still looks quite intimidating.

Your waistline has expanded and your tolerance for Morecambe and Wise may well have run out! Its the New Year and, for us at Selby Police Station, it is business as usual.

In fact, we never stopped over the Christmas holidays. Each of the days there was a team of officers working out there, in the district, to ensure that everyone else could have a safe and fun time.

The drink drive campaign, the public order patrols, the licensing visits and the shop theft patrols added to our daily work, but I’m pleased to say we had a relatively peaceful period too.

Our volunteers at Sherburn and Eggborough have continued to staff the two stations inquiry offices, making access to us even easier out in the villages.

It’s now that we look forward to the end of the financial year, March 31 and try to bring in statistical figures that show the work we do with you and our partners is successful. So far we have a crime reduction on last year’s figures.

This shows that, for the fourth year running, we and our partnerships have driven down reported crime. That’s something to be cheered. We have reduced anti social behaviour again. That too is to be cheered. It is these things that go toward making Selby District the safe and pleasant place that it is.

We are now working with a Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan. This is new for us and presents new challenges and opportunities. She will be attending the Tadcaster Community Engagement Forum, at the Riley Smith Hall Tadcaster, on Tuesday evening.

This presents you with a chance to both hear her thoughts on policing and for you to ask questions about her role. See you there? Further detail is available on the CEF website (your-community.org.uk).

We still ask for your help though. We can’t sit back and think the job’s done. It is all our responsibilities to ensure that we take the right precautions with our homes and possessions. Your local beat managers and PCSOs are on hand to assist you with this.

If you would like a home survey carrying out, your 4x4’s catalytic convertor marking, your horses saddle post coding, or any other advice, then please just ring them and stop them in the street to make an appointment or to seek the advice you need.

So that’s it from me, for now. Please may I take the opportunity to wish you, on behalf of myself and all who work for and with us, a happy and prosperous new year.

Insp Richard Abbott
