COURAGEOUS mum Toni Wood has praised supporters of the lifeline Thomas Cammack Appeal for raising a fantastic £35,000 to help her young son.

Little Thomas has undergone a year’s worth of treatment after he was diagnosed with Stage Four High Risk Neuroblastoma in January last year.

But Mum Toni, of Volta Street, is also urging that people continue to get behind the appeal which aims to support Thomas if he suffers a relapse and needs to go abroad for treatment.

She said: “I think that £35,000 is a huge achievement for all our fund-raisers, however we still have a long way to go to reach our target of £300,000. We really need to keep the momentum that we have seen already, as if Thomas was to relapse we would need funds quickly.

“Parents of a little girl with neuroblastoma who was treated alongside Thomas were recently quoted £500,000 for the treatment she needs in New York. Her family, friends and local community had to work really hard at the worst possible time to find those funds. They did it though, and she recently left for a six-month stay in a New York hospital.”

She added: “We are hoping with everything that we have that Thomas’s scans will show no evidence of disease.

“If this is the case, it will be a huge moment but it will not mean that we are out of the woods yet, the relapse rate with neuroblastoma is so high that we will have regular testing for the next five years, and only if Thomas gets to five years post treatment without relapse would he be given the all clear.”

Thomas is looking forward to his fourth birthday on Saturday. Last year he spent his birthday in hospital receiving chemotherapy so he hopes that this year he will be able to enjoy it at home with his family.
