A DISUSED field transformed into a wildlife haven with an almost £50,000 Big Lottery grant has been officially opened.
The Widlife Habitat Protection Trust opened the Little Fenton Community Wildlife Meadow on January 19.
It now boasts a young fruit orchard, wildlife walk, insect towers and newly-planted hedgerows as well as a pond dipping platform. The site was funded by a Big Lottery fund called Changing Spaces, which awarded the project £49,224.
Though the site is still very young, by this summer the wild flowers and grass will be left to grow to create an ideal habitat for insects and birds around the edge of the field. The orchard will grow into an established area with apples, plums, cherries, pears and crab apples.
Trust chief executive Martin Blakey said: “You can visit this site for free and have a family picnic or explore the nature around.
“If you keep visiting you will see the biodiversity value grow as the site establishes.”
