COUNCILLOR Townend's recent commuter residents comments (and the reaction to them) have certainly served as a catalyst to an interesting debate on community engagement in Snaith and Cowick.
While an unfortunate generalisation in that he singled out residents on new developments, he has nevertheless highlighted a very relevant and important issue for all residents in Snaith.
I do believe, however, that the safety of the area, its vibr
ancy and community are under threat.
We all have some small responsibility to contribute to the area we live in, whether that be through community groups, sports activites, PTAs, churches, shopping locally or ensuring that we instill values into our children so that they do not blight our area though anti-social behaviour.
If we choose not to do so, then we must be aware of the consequences. We must be aware that the risk is that there may be no Sports Hall or churches (whether or not one is religious, our churches have huge architectural and aesthetic value).
Some of the local shops may find they are no longer viable and close, our streets may no longer be safe and blighted by not just low-level anti-social behaviour but also drugs and knife crime.
One tangible example of the loss of community in recent years is the loss of Snaith Show.
There is much to be positive about Snaith and Cowick right now – and I hope that many of my concerns for the future are unwarranted. There are plenty of people who give their time to many different diverse community and sports groups in the area.
I think it fair to say, however, that the age bracket of those who do so is generally much older.
I believe these groups need younger blood from all areas of our town to shape the future for Snaith and Cowick.
Contributing to one's community can be hard work and has no financial benefit – but can also have immense rewards not just for now but hopefully for future generations.
