YORKSHIRE watercolour artist Ashley Jackson will be joining the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham for a special book signing of his new book ‘My Yorkshire Sketch Book’ today.

A perfect Christmas event bringing together the very essence of Yorkshire, the Yorkshire landscape captured in Ashley Jackson’s sketches alongside the taste of Yorkshire in a bottle – the perfect Yorkshire combination.

The hardback book published by Dalesman Publications features the original working sketches which were the basis for some of the watercolour paintings. It is the first time that Ashley has unveiled raw sketches and emotions with only a few images of paintings to show how the minimal pencil lines capture the essence of the landscape to then become a watercolour painting.

Ashley describes his new book: “It is a small book that I am immensely proud of as it holds a collection of sketches that I have chosen from my own personal sketchbook dating back over 50 years. I hope that it will inspire others to visit the locations and absorb the stunning surroundings of Yorkshire and the Dales.”

The special book signing takes place at the Black Sheep Brewery Visitors’ Centre, Wellgarth, Masham, North Yorkshire HG4 4EN on Thursday, December 13 from 1-2pm.

Entry is free and the Visitors’ Centre’s Sheepy Shop will be open to purchase the book and for last minute Christmas gifts. Brewery tours will also be running throughout the day.

Rob Theakston, Managing Director of the Black Sheep Brewery, said: “We are very proud to be playing host to the signing session for Ashley’s latest book.

“Like Black Sheep, Ashley Jackson is a part of Yorkshire’s cultural landscape and we are very much looking forward to bringing the two together on December 13.”

Most recently Ashley has been filming with BBC 1 Countryfile for a feature to be aired on 30th December where he captured the Bronte atmosphere of Top Withens – the proposed inspiration site for Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

November 28, saw Ashley Jackson joining with presenter Ellie Harrison to have a go at sketching under his expert tuition. The stunning location and great weather allowed him to paint until the last light was visible in the sky, sharing his passion for the Yorkshire landscape with a new audience.

Ashley first visited Top Withens in 1966 with fellow artist and friend Stanley Chapman, the haunting location and setting for Wuthering Heights was to have a life long influence bringing school children to the site in 1972 and campaigning for the preservation of the Yorkshire heritage site.

Ashley said: “When I was sixteen I wrote in my sketch book that I wished to do with the brush what the Brontes had done with the pen. Today at 72 my passion remains the same for Yorkshire and the Brontes; I hope that Countryfile will allow others to view the moors as I see her – my mistress with all her womanly contours.”

The Countryfile edition is to be aired on December 30 – tune in to see what happened to his painting after filming on the moor.

We have teamed up with Ashley Jackson and have five copies of the book to give away.

To be in with a chance of winning, answer this question – where is the Black Sheep Brewery?

Entries should be sent to: Book Competition, Selby Times, 74-76 Gowthorpe, Selby, YO8 4ET, by Wednesday December 19.
