BRIT award winner set to perform at Selby Town Hall
Beverley Craven will be appearing at Selby Town Hall.
SINGING sensation and BRIT award winner Beverley Craven brings her intimate autumn acoustic tour to Selby later this month.
She is set to appear at the town hall on Saturday November 17 with songs from her forthcoming studio album, fan favourites and classic hit singles that made her a household name in the early 1990s.
She was first thrust into the limelight in 1991 with the release of her single Promise Me, which peaked at number three in the UK charts and became a huge hit across Europe. The song was taken from her eponymous debut album, which also reached the top five and went on to sell over 1.2 million copies, going double platinum in the UK alone.
Beverley was raised in Hertfordshire and, encouraged by her mother - an accomplished classical violinist - began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. After a brief stint at art college, Beverley left home at 18 and moved to London, intent on carving out a career in the music business. The next few years saw her struggling to find the all-important break, making ends meet with a succession of day jobs whilst pursuing her musical ambitions with session work and pub gigs. In the late 80s, Beverley’s perseverance paid off when she was offered a job as a backing vocalist on a European tour with soul legend Bobby Womack, and then in 1988, the big break finally came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Epic Records who immediately offered her a recording contract.
After a stint in the States, developing her writing and performing skills, Beverley commenced work on her self-titled debut album which was released in the UK in 1990. Its success was almost unprecedented. Within a year the record had been certified double platinum and it went on to spend an incredible 52 weeks on the UK album chart. In 1992 Beverley received the BRIT Award for Best British Newcomer and was also nominated for both Best British single and Album of the Year. Performing on stage at the awards ceremony, Beverley was eight months pregnant and she gave birth to her first daughter, Mollie, in March of that year.
After the release of her second album, Love Scenes, which reached number four in the charts, Beverley decided to take a break from the music scene. In 2004 she returned with a handful of live concert appearances, but the following year received devastating news when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following treatment she was finally given the all-clear the next year and, in 2009, decided to go back on the road. Now playing alongside Saxophonist Frank Mead in a stripped down show, and with an autobiography and new album due soon, Beverley is once again touring the land to rave reviews.
“This is the first time we’ve ever hosted a BRIT Award winner at the Town Hall” said town council arts officer Chris Jones.
“With over four million albums sold worldwide, Beverley is yet another great coup for our autumn season. She is renowned as a fantastically warm performer and it will be wonderful to hear those hits stripped back in our intimate little venue.”
Doors open at 7.30pm for the 8pm show.
Tickets are priced at £18 in advance or £20 on the door, phone 01757 708449 or visit www.selbytownhall.co.uk
