Duo are on the Mark

A VERY special one off arrives at the Shire Hall at Howden on Saturday March 6 in the form of Mark Nightingale and Mark Crooks.

The two Marks don't play regularly together, so this gig can be described as a true jam session, as the pair will be making it up as they go along.

Mark Crooks began his musical training by earning a degree in music performance at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. He moved to London to study on the postgraduate jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music after winning the Young Jazz Player of the Year Competition in 1991.

Since leaving college Mark has worked in a wide range of musical settings including classical work and shows but is most at home in the jazz world. He has played in all of London's top jazz venues and at jazz festivals up and down the country.

When he was 15 Mark Nightingale entered the BBC national rehearsal band competition and was awarded the Don Lusher prize for the best trombonist.

He eventually ended up on the music course at Trinity College. Among those with whom Nightingale has played with are John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Urbie Green, Carl Fontana, Jiggs Whigham, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Thilo Berg, Alan Barnes, Bill Holman, Claire Martin, Clark Tracey, and Stan Tracey. He also plays trombone on Sting's album Ten Summoner's Tales.

Tickets are 10 and available from Touchwood in Howden 01430 431535, Dt's Rockshop in Goole 01405 767282 and online from Dig Yorkshire via www.howden-live.com where you can catch up on current events and see the new Spring season in all its glory.

MARK Nightingale and Mark Crooks will be at the Shire Hall next week.
