The Kabeedies: Soap

HAILING from Norwich, jaunty four-piece The Kabeedies release their second album Soap, and the first for their new label Fierce Panda.

With influences as varied as Blondie to Bombay Bicycle Club via Buddy Holly, you can imagine their music is something of an eclectic mix. But a joyous one at that!

From the upbeat opening of Hang-Ups Of The West to the Vampire Weekend-styled fast-paced rhythmic closer LT, Soap is a thing of beauty; light and breezy but able to pack a punch when required.

There’s an element of The Smiths to their musical compositions, but The Kabeedies are very much a band of the present. The jangly guitars and frenetic vocals are more rounded than debut Rumpus, which was a much more angular sound, as befits a band finding their feet and not scared to experiment.

Indeed, that’s very much how the band decided on the album’s name. Drummer Fab explains: “The second album was a catharsis for all of us, effectively washing off what we had done with Rumpus and starting again.”

And what you’re left with is a much more sophisticated sound, but one that’s still pumped full of energy and life.

Particular favourites are, rather unsurprisingly, previous single releases Come Out Of The Blue and Santiago, but there’s some hidden gems on the LP as well, most notably the introspective Underfloor Lover and the slightly morose sounding Drowning Doll.

An album that surpasses all expectations, and sets some dauntingly high ones for future releases.

Release Date: January 30
