Silver screen anniversary

THREE years and 10,000 people through the doors certainly gives Selby Globe Community Cinema something to celebrate this Saturday.

The popular not-for-profit group. which is run entirely by volunteers, has teamed up with McDonald’s for a birthday celebration on September 22 to celebrate Selby Globe’s third birthday with a special screening of The Lorax (2012) at the town hall venue.

The Lorax is set in the walled city of Thneed-Ville, where everything is artificial and even the air is a commodity. A boy named Ted hopes to win the heart of his dream girl, Audrey.

When he learns of her wish to see a real tree, Ted seeks out the Once-ler, a ruined old businessman outside of town in a stark wasteland. Upon hearing of how the hermit gave into his greed for profits and devastated the land over the protests of the Lorax, Ted is inspired to undo the disaster. However, the greedy mayor of Thneed-Ville, Aloysius O’Hare, has made his fortune exploiting the environmental collapse and is determined to stop the boy from undermining his business.

Selby Globe project manager Eva Lambert (above with daughter Maya) said: “We are so proud to be celebrating our third birthday this month. We really wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped Selby Globe during the three years we have been showing film in Selby and the surrounding district.

“The project has grown from strength to strength since it first started in September 2009. We are just as excited about film and will continue to strive to bring more opportunities to see film in the town.”

Tickets, priced £1.50, are available from the town hall itself, by ringing 01757 708449, or paying on the door. Doors open at 9.30am for a 10am screening.

We have four tickets and a meal for four at McDonald’s on Three Lakes retail park to give away in our EXCLUSIVE competition. To enter, tell us which famous writer wrote The Lorax.

Send your answer, together with your name, address and daytime telephone number, including an email address if you have one, to: Selby Globe McDonald’s Competition, 74-76 Gowthorpe, Selby, YO8 4ET. Closing date is tomorrow (Friday September 21 2012) at midday. Usual Selby Times rules apply.
