The Jezebels set for debut album and UK tour

The Jezabels

The Jezabels

After a year spent honing their genre-defying craft and playing sold out shows at venues such as Heaven, The Jezabels are pleased to announce that Monday March 5 will see the UK release of debut album Prisoner.

The album, which hit number two and has been certified gold in their native Australia, proceeds 2011’s stormy, heart-pounding singles ‘Endless Summer’ and ‘Trycolour’ and follows new single ‘Rosebud’, to be released on Monday February 6, as well as The Jezabels’ headline NME Awards Show on February 22.

Comparisons between front woman Hayley Mary’s performances and those of Kate Bush as well as more modern heroes Karen O and Florence Welch are not without warrant, her energy and tone stunning at times. Her soaring vocals provide an angsty, yet immensely powerful lyricism to the enormous and often cinematic sound provided by guitarist Sam Lockwood and keyboardist Heather Shannon, while drummer Nik Kaloper injects the album with what’s been described as a perpetual ball of rhythm.

Prisoner is an intense trip that drifts between the anthemic floor-stompers and the gothic slow burners yet never loses pace or consistency. The haunting pipe organ of the opening title track falls into the sweeping, reverb-laden guitars of ‘Endless Summer’ and the dark, ballad-like ‘Long Highway’. While instrumental track ‘Austerlitz’ and the dark, filmic string arrangement of ‘Deep Wide Ocean’ prove that The Jezabels are a force to be reckoned with.

Themes of anger, oppression, and, obviously, imprisonment crop up regularly on the first full length release by The Jezabels, but there also exists in equal measure a great deal of hope, empowerment and acceptance. Piece Of Mind and Catch Me carry an ambient production courtesy of Lachlan Mitchell (whose work on the album was a change from his heavy metal background) that even Brian Eno would be proud of, closing an album that Hayley describes as being like “talking to a prisoner at the start, trying to coax them out and at the end, it just is freedom.”
