Unique jazz band comes to Goole

AWARD winning jazz/fusion group, Sax Appeal, are to perform at Junction this weekend as part of its commitment to live music.

Made-up of five saxophonists and accompanied by a line-up of rhythm musicians and percussionists, Sax Appeal have been touring their unique brand of jazz all over the world since 1980.

The band won the Post Office British Jazz Award in the year 2000, as well as the John Dankworth Award For Ensemble in the 1998 B.T. Jazz Awards.

Formed in Manchester in 1980 by leader Derek Nash, Sax Appeal went on to win a National Festival Of Music For Youth award in 1983, culminating in performances at the Purcell Room, the Royal Albert Hall and on television.

Re-formed in London in 1984 the band played regularly all over England. They won a Jazz South touring bursary in 1988, Arts Council funding for an extensive U.K. tour in 1995, and performed in Venezuela, South America, for the British Council in 1996.

They have performed regularly on TV and radio. Festivals in Europe have included Marciac and Coutances in France, and three repeat bookings at the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland. The band has recorded four CDs: "Flat Out", "Let's Go", "Outside In" and "Take No Prisoners-Live", all gaining excellent reviews.

Junction has recently announced a line-up of films for the next couple of months and will be launching the new season of live events (covering April to June) in just a couple of weeks. With over 500 people through the doors of the theatre/cinema in the last week alone the venue is going from strength to strength, says Marketing officer, Chris Williams.

"We're at the stage now where people are beginning to appreciate that we have a top quality cinema here, with great surround sound, full size screen, proper seating, a caf-bar… and people are starting to take risks too - trying out something new and booking tickets for live events for the first time," he said.

"Hopefully people will be just as encouraged to try out new music here - like Sax Appeal, Hutchings & Nicol on March 20 and Anita Wardell on March 27."

Sax Appeal will perform at Junction, Paradise Place, Goole on Saturday at 8pm. Tickets are priced at 10/8. To book, or for further details call 01405 763652.
