The judging criteria used for the gardens was (all to a maximum of 25 points) - overall impression, standard of horticulture, sustainable planting and floral planting, evidence of conservation and recycling, condition of hard landscaping and appropriateness of weed growth.

A spokesman said: "All the gardens entered were of a 'good' or 'very good' standard with the winners scoring between 75 to 84 per cent.

"The Goole in Bloom Group know there are many other excellent gardens in Goole and look forward to even more entries in 2009.

"The Buchanan baskets and planters were quite a surprise and we would also welcome more entries from pubs and hotels. "Gardening gift vouchers for the residential winners were for California Gardens, who generously gave the event organisers a discount.
