A NEW exhibition to mark the 75th Anniversary of the town's municipal charter opened at Goole Museum on Tuesday.
The exhibition contains items from the day of celebration on October 27 1933 and the attention surrounding the festivities.
Museum curator Peter Appleyard said: "This was a major event for Goole, and at the time, one of the biggest in its history.
"It gave Goole the ability to govern itself and the ceremony was overseen by Prince George, Duke of Kent, making it one of the few royal visits to Goole."
The ceremony included the planting of trees, complete with plaque, by Prince George. Both the plaque and the spade used to dig the trees are on display in the new exhibit.
The decision to award Goole the charter came after a 1927 petition in favour of the change gained a majority of 3,334 in favour, 1266 opposed.
Other exhibits include the charter itself, a programme for the event and various photographs.
