RESPECT is the theme of a Local Action Week event being held in Goole from Monday (June 30) by East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Safe Communities team.
Organised in conjunction with a number of partner organisations, including The Hinge, Humberside Police and Vermuyden School, the event ties in with the ongoing work of the Advance Goole project.
It aims to tackle anti-social behaviour, crime and o
ther issues to improve the quality of life of people living in the town, as well as instilling a sense of pride in the local community, and respect for people and property.
A series of activities have been planned to reinforce the 'respect' message and encourage local people to take action to address the issues that concern them most.
Helen Wheeler-Osman, an officer in the council's Safe Communities team, said: "We want to see as many people getting involved as possible, regardless of age.
"Local Action Week is about encouraging residents to get involved in their community so that we can tackle things like graffiti, anti-social behaviour and littering.
"It's a chance for people to take action to help us address the issues that concern them the most.
"By working in partnership with lots of different organisations, we can make a real difference to residents."
Included in the activities lined up are an aerobics class at the leisure centre, free football coaching, a chance to visit Humberside Fire and Rescue's trailer, and after school reading at the library.
On Friday, July 4, nine local primary schools will battle it out in a five-a-side football tournament at Victoria Pleasure Ground organised by Goole Town Council and The Hinge.
Community coach, Andy Ullathorne, is sponsoring one trophy and a plate, the other is sponsored by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT). The Hinge is giving every child that takes part a 'goodie bag'.
The Hinge's Youth and Social Inclusion Project leader Chantal Russell said: "The Hinge is heavily involved in Local Action Week and I am over the moon that all nine local schools have agreed to participate in the tournament. We hope to make the tournament an annual event."
The week long scheme will conclude with a community day in West Park on Sunday, July 6, from 11am with a football tournament in which 20 adult five-a-side football teams will compete for the Local Action Week trophy.
The tournament has been organised by The Hinge and the council's Safe Communities team. Hosted by KC FM99.8, it will offer plenty for people to see and do, including entertainment for children, refreshments and a football skills showcase.
