RISE in car parking charges will have a detrimental effect on town centre trade according to leading businessmen.
AThe hike from 70p to £1 per hour in short stay and £2.80 to £3.50 in long stay was announced this week and will start on April 14 in East Riding Council car parks, including those in Goole and Howden.
But Garrey Haase, vice chairman of Goole Retai
l Forum and owner of Boothferry Road business Michael James Opticians, said: "It's not good news.
"We're trying to encourage more people to come to town and it will have a detrimental effect on that.
"People are less likely to come into town just to browse, and will only come when they specifically want something, so no, it's not a good thing."
Retail Forum chairman, and owner of Carter Street's Pride of Bride, Mike Pearson said it was a little early to get feedback from members on the increases.
But he said on a personal level if these were compared to similar towns like Selby, where it is 70p for two hours parking, it seemed "quite steep".
"It seems a bit excessive to me," he said. "Whether it will stop people coming I don't know."
ERYC felt the increases were preferable to other options such as cutting services or raising more money through Council Tax.
All of the increases will be advertised from this week in the relevant on and off-street parking areas in Goole and Howden, as well as across the county.
An ERYC spokesman said: "The decision to approve these increases was taken following feedback from residents which suggested many would prefer to see increases in car parking charges rather than a greater increase in council tax or cuts in services."
Councillor Symon Fraser added: "Car parking charges were discussed extensively at our budget conferences in the autumn and there was general agreement that the charges could be increased if the alternative is a reduction is essential services.
"The increases will not be very popular with motorists but sadly they are a necessary evil.
"The all-day charges remain significantly lower than those in Hull and York."
More information on the new charges will be available from today, Thursday March 20, on 01482 393939 or visiting www.eastriding.gov.uk, clicking on "roads, streets and transport", then "traffic orders".
