POLICE and council officials have welcomed an Anti Social Behaviour Order to cover the whole of England and Wales which was placed on a Reedness man.
Anthony Peter Luke Fish (31) of Old Hill Cottages had the order imposed on him by Goole Magistrates on January 25.
Fish targeted the town's community through shoplifting and aggressive begging. The court found that he had acted in an anti social man
ner that caused, or was likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Safe Communities Officer Tracey Shenton, said: "It is important that persistent shoplifters are dealt with positively, enabling customers to shop without the fear of witnessing a
crime whilst at the same time protecting the business community.
"Mr Fish has targeted vulnerable people whilst begging on the streets of Goole. He has approached people at cash points, women with small children and people loading their shopping into their cars. This is not acceptable."
Fish was already subject to an ASBO imposed by Selby magistrates following aggressive begging in the Selby district.
However, this new order covers England and Wales and prohibits him from: begging or asking for personal, charitable or other donations in any public place, street, highway, court or passage or cause, procure or encourage any other person to do so within England and Wales.
It also prohibits him from: entering or attempting to enter an exclusion area within the town of Goole (Boothferry Road, Pasture Road, Edinburgh Street including Wesley Square, Stanhope Street, Belgravia, Mariners Street, Coronation Street, Paradise Place and the Tower Roundabout at the junction of Boothferry Road and Stanhope Street) unless he has a pre-arranged appointment in this area or he is going to Goole Railway Station to travel for drug treatment and testing order appointments in Hull or he is returning from Goole Railway Station.
Goole Police Inspector Mick Bower said: "I welcome the decision by the magistrates to impose an Anti-Social Behaviour Order on Mr Fish.
"The work carried out by the Police and Safe Communities Team has brought about this order, which will help to protect the people of Goole from Mr Fish's unwelcome behaviour."
The ASBO will last for two years, until January 25, 2007. If Fish breaches it he could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to £5,000.
Members of the public are asked to report if Fish breaches this order to police on 0845 6060222 or the Safe Communities Team on 01482 396380.
