STAFF and owners of a long established town centre pub have closed the doors to lunchtime customers.
After 24 years running The Old George on Market Place, Ray and Maria Jessney have called it a day, the site having been bought by a property developer.
Ray and Maria came to Goole in 1972 to work with Maria's parents Costa and Eleni at what was then
the Olympia Grill Rooms.
They bought The Old George, formerly known as King George IV, in 1980 and after spending four years personally developing the pub, they opened in October 1984.
But after over two decades of pulling pints and serving homecooked lunches, the pair are decided to retire, and after receiving an offer from a property developer that they could not refuse they decided to sell up and move on.
The pub has closed to lunchtime trade but remains open four nights a week (Thursday to Sunday) until everything is finalised with the developers, who plan to build retail units and flats on the site.
Maria told the Courier: "We have enjoyed the business enormously and will greatly miss our customers, friends and staff. We would like to thank everyone for their valued support without which none of this would have been possible.
"We would especially like to thank our daughters Sally and Dianne and are looking forward to helping Sally with her new venture of outside catering called 'Food By George!'."
She added: "The traditional local pub atmosphere no longer exists and the new culture of 'stack em high and sell it cheap' pubs is not our thing.
"Age is not on our side and we are ready to enjoy a more relaxing lifestyle."
