RESIDENTS of Alexandra Street have revealed how refurbishment work on their old houses has made them look like new.
The facelift work known as Changing Streets, is part of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Advance Goole housing scheme which includes improving 55 streets.
One side of Alexandra Street has been completed with the exception of two properties which are awaiting rendering and the opposite side has scaffolding erected with work set to be completed by May 23.
Works have included replacing fascias, guttering and fall pipes, cleaning and re-pointing brickwork, replacing wooden doors and windows with UPVC and replacing with energy efficient insulation where necessary.
Alexander Street resident Lesley Sheriff said: "It has made a big improvement and my side of the street looks a lot brighter as a result.
"It looks like a new house and it has well been worth the wait.
"They have also put an acid wash on the gable ends and you can now stand at one end and notice it has made a huge difference because before there was graffiti."
Janet Bidder added: "I am really pleased with it although it seemed to go on for a long time and we were closed in for weeks on end.
"At first I couldn't notice much difference but now all the scaffolding has been taken down you can see it has tidied it up and when you look across the street you can really notice it.
"It is remarkable how well the brick work looks."
A total of 113 houses in four Goole streets - Alexandra, Humber, Kingston and Milton - will receive refurbishment as part of the scheme.
A council spokesman added: "Work is progressing very well in Kingston Street with one side almost complete, whilst Milton and Humber Streets, which are one-sided streets are also progressing very well.
"The whole of phase One (four streets) will be complete by May 23 and we are planning phase two (eight streets) to start at the end of August."
