THOUSANDS more homes and businesses in Selby district are set to benefit from the roll out of superfast broadband - but not as quickly as first thought.
As revealed in the Selby Times last month, Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) announced that a further 34 North Yorkshire locations are to be included in the roll out, with Camblesforth, Hemingbrough and South Milford - which in turn will serve the likes of Sherburn, Monk Fryston and Hillam - amongst those.
The first step in this process will take place by the end of March, with the whole of the county due to be covered by the end of 2014.
A SFNY spokesman confirmed this week that in Selby district the initial process would see the fibre for the broadband installed by the end of this month, the cabinet which will enable the broadband enhancement is then scheduled to take place by the end of the year.
This new move equates to an additional 24,000 homes and business which will now be included in the roll-out, bringing the total number of premises with fibre connections to 160,000 across the region.
Councilor Carl Les, SFNY chairman - which awarded the fibre laying contract to BT - said: “Investment in fibre and faster broadband speeds will be a key part of our economic revival as we finally shrug off the effects of the downturn and create a better, more prosperous future.”
