A BUSINESS which began life two years ago at York’s Eco Business Centre has moved to new warehousing and office space at Escrick Business Park and expects to employ around 20 people by the end of next year.

Sumec UK Ltd has taken a 10,000 sq ft warehousing unit at Escrick Business Park and is currently fitting it out with 3,000 sq ft of office space to meet growing UK demand for its expanding Phono Solar renewables product range. The company, headed by Mariana Hall and her husband Steve, is also planning to use the space to showcase some of the leading edge solar energy technology.

Escrick Business Park is now headquarters for the successful UK company which imports and distributes renewable technology products from China. Originally a subsidiary of Sumec’s European operation, the UK operation gained its independence in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength since then.

Says MD Mariana Hall: “We are at the cutting edge of solar and wind technology and have ambitious growth plans for the business in the UK. This move reflects that.”

Sumec’s 12-strong team is moving from Clifton Moor this month while fit-out work on the new premises continues. Once completed, the double unit at Escrick will house extensive warehousing space, a sales and marketing suite, additional offices and an inspection and service repair area.

“For us, customer care has always been a major focus not just at the point of sale but going forward,” says after-sales manager Steve Hall. “From our new HQ we have the scope to improve that still further.”

The company is committed to supporting the local economy.

“For the fit-out most of the suppliers we are using are local – architect, joiners fabricators and plumbers all come from within a mile or so of Escrick Business Park.

“It matters to us to put something back into the community,” added Steve.

Sumec is one of a number of businesses with international connections expanding on the Escrick Business Park site.
