FEARS for the future of Ferrybridge power station, voiced by MEP Godfrey Bloom last week, are unfounded according to bosses at the plant.

Mr Bloom hit out at an EU directive which he claimed was forcing power stations to close - including Ferrybridge where many Selby district residents work.

He said: “I find it remarkable that not one single person has referred to the EU Industrial Emissions Directive that is behind this unnecessary closure of perfectly good coal fired power stations across the country, meaning Britain will not have the capability of producing its own energy supply.

But a Ferrybridge spokesman said: “The EU Industrial Emission Directive only affects units one and two of the power station. We have made no announcement that we plan to close the power station.

“All of the capacity at Fiddler’s Ferry and Uskmouth and half of the capacity at Ferrybridge (over 3,300MW in total) currently complies with the Directive and has the option to operate for 17,500 hours between 2016 and 2023. Adding value to this favourable position SSE is investing in its fleet of coal plants gaining valuable experience and developing a range of options that can maximise the value and longevity of these assets.”
