Striking lorry drivers march against job cuts in Doncaster - VIDEO
ANGRY striking lorry drivers plan marched on one of Doncaster’s biggest Tesco supermarkets today to protest over job losses.
More than 100 drivers paraded from the Tesco distribution depot on Middle Bank, at Doncaster Carr, to the company’s store at Church View, near the Doncaster transport interchange.
It is part of a protest by the drivers which saw a 48-hour strike start at midnight last night.
Members of the drivers’ union Unite say the protests could potentially disrupt supplies to Tesco stores across the region.
The drivers will start gathering at Middle Bank at 10am, before heading to the Tesco store to hand out leaflets to shoppers.
The strike will end at 12.05am on Thursday.
The strike comes after an overwhelming vote in favour of industrial action, after the drivers’ new employers, Eddie Stobart Ltd, issued 90 days’ notice of termination of employment last month.
Unite regional officer, Harriet Eisner, said: “The drivers are furious at the way they have been treated by this callous management.
“It seems management are hell-bent on throwing them onto the dole queue by Christmas.”
