A PLUCKY reverend will be praying for divine pedal power when he attempts a 72.6-mile bike ride round churches in Selby deanery for charity.
Rev John Hetherington, rector of Monk Fryston and South Milford, is to call at 25 churches during his challenge on September 8.
A self-confessed novice cyclist, John accepted the cycle challenge after someone suggested the length of it “was no distance really”. Rev Hetherington added: “I have only just took the stabilisers off my bike! I do not cycle at all.”
The cycling cleric’s challenge is part of the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust scheme to get people to cycle or walk round the churches of their area, which takes place each September. Rev Hetherington is raising cash for the scheme and also for a new roof on St Wilfrid’s Church in Monk Fryston.
During his ride he will visit churches in Aberford, Barkston Ash, Barlow, Birkin, Brayton, Carlton, Cawood, Drax, Fairburn, Haddlesey, Hambleton, Ledsham, Ledston, Micklefield, Monk Fryston, Saxton, Selby, Sherburn, South Milford, Templehirst, Thorpe Willoughby and Wistow – but not in that order!
If you want to sponsor John, contact him on hetherington556@btinternet.com or 01977 680788. He added: “Your support will be much appreciated and it will make the miles go by a little quicker!”
