TRINITY Methodist Church is set to be bulldozed and rebuilt after leaders decided it’s just too costly to run.

The church, at the junction of Boothferry Road and Clifton Gardens, has been without heating for the past two years, and last year a depserate plea was issued for help with fund-raising.

Now the church council has decided it is time to call it quits and architects have been drafted in to come up with designs for a more cost-effective new-build.

The Rev Geoff Shutt explained: “We’ve been looking at ways of making the church sustainable for the future and the architects drew up feasibility studies for upgrading or having a new build.

“We took the decision that it would be better to go for a new building on the same site as it would be cheaper than upgrading.

“It is quite a brave decision to move forward but the church is over 100 years old and takes a lot of upkeep. It currently needs a lot of work to bring it up to scratch and every job is a mammoth task.

“We have been without heating for a long time and currently meet in the schoolrooms during winter. People want warmer buildings these days.”

Rev Shutt said the architect was developing the plans, which would also include car parking space.

“It needs a lot of thinking about during the next few months. It’s quite an involved process and we will have to look at what we need and set this against what we can afford. For instance, we want to ensure that we have proper facilities for the Mission Trinity group who do such a lot of work with local homeless people.

“Once we decide on a plan and what it will cost we will have a lot of fund-raising to do. We will get help from the Methodist Circuit but we will also be looking to the town, to businesses and other organisations for support.

“We want the building to be a place of worship that the town can be proud of.”

In the meantime, Rev Shutt was keen to stress that the church would continue to meet in the schoolrooms until the opening of the new one.
