A GOOLE school is currently undergoing a million pound plus refurbishment.

Marshlands School on Swinefleet Road had the builders in and, in just a few months, will have bigger classrooms, a brand new foundation unit, a new kitchen, an extended computer suite and a new community room.

“It’s been a while coming,” said headteacher Julie Newby. “The council identified that, because of the size of our classrooms and the number of children now at the school that work needed to be done.”

Work on the major project started in June and is expected to be completed by May.

“The first stage is the new kitchen, which should be finished in the next two weeks,” said Julie. “The new work will give us better facilities for both pupils and parents and will also enable to develop the amount of special needs work at the school.

“The computer suite is going to be increased from 20 to 30 computers and the extra space will also enable us to have lessons in there, which we can’t at the moment and our purpose-built foundation unit will also have an outdoor area so we will be able to do outdoor learning for that age group which will be fantastic and the community room will allow our children to work alongside their parents.

The project is costing £1.5million and Julie says that it will significantly enhance the school’s ability to teach.

“The money is coming from the local authority and it’s very welcome. There’s a fair amount of upheaval at the moment as we still have the builders on site and will do for a few more months,” she said. “But it’s definitely going to be worth it when it’s all finished.

“It will just make a massive difference for the children – the amount of space we’ll have available will be amazing – and our capacity to provide creative learning will be greatly increased. It’s a great opportunity for all of us at Marshgate to improve the quality of the school experience for everyone.”
