A new way of learning

A PILOT project which is poised to transform the classroom at Goole High School has been launched with a visit to Goole Docks.
Ahead of the opening of the Create Studio on the site of the Academy in September, a group of Year 9 students are trialling a ground-breaking system of project-based learning which will be on offer to post 14 students.
Using one of the town’s docks as a subject, the team are being tasked with researching the topic: “What do you do with an empty dock?”
The trip to the docks included a boat tour; a look at the dockside operations of shipping company RMS Europe; and a presentation and discussion led by ABP.
Lead teacher Louise Clamp said: “It is all about engaging the students and helping them to see how their learning applies to the real world in their own locality. We basically want to prepare them for the world of work within the area’s quite specific industries – including engineering and logistics.”
For the trial, the students are looking at the docks heritage and the environmental impact of a dock being empty, and then they will be tasked with setting up a business plan for its future use.
