Alert over bogus callers

HUMBERSIDE Police have issued a fresh warning against bogus callers, after a spate of incidents.

It is believed the new wave of callers claim to be from a bank and ask the recipient for their bank details over the phone.

Police say there has also been calls in North Yorkshire from someone claiming to be from BT, asking for an unpaid telephone bill.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "Somebody has been calling residents claiming to be from BT and telling them they owe the company money and unless they pay it over the phone immediately BT will cut them off.

"BT have stated they would never threaten immediate disconnection over the phone or immediate settlement of an account."

Following the incidents police are asking people to be wary of door callers and to check for identification before handing over any information.

Genuine business people will not ask for money on the spot, or change their quote instantly. They will also be happy to show identification.

To report a bogus caller call 0845 60 60 222. Or if you have received a BT call contact BT Nuisance Calls Bureau on 0800 411422 as well as contacting the police immediately.
