Award winner in the frame
Darran Buckley, from Cawood, has won a national photography competition - Pentax Meet Britain - with his portrait of a Shetland man (pictured).
KEEPING old traditions and skills alive has earned a top photographer from Cawood first prize in a national competition.
Darran Buckley, 48, won the Pentax Meet Britain award in the Friends and Family category two weeks ago with a portrait of Shetland man Drewie Lawrenson, exhibited at the Design Museum in London.
He said the photograph was part of his ongoing project about people keeping old traditions and skills alive and kicking titled “Old Ways, Modern Days”.
He added that he hoped one day to put the work together as a photographic book, but this was something that was only an idea at the moment.
He further added: “It was great to be recognised and to win this award. It was a great achievement and is recognition for the hard work I’ve put into my photography. I’ve lived in Cawood for the past two years. Previous to that I lived in Sherburn for 25 years. My school years were spent in Leeds where I was born. I work full time for the National Blood Service within the Hospital Services department, supplying blood and blood-related products to hospitals throughout our region on a 24-hour basis.
“Photography is a serious hobby of mine and over the past few years I have started to develop my skills in a more professional way.
“I hope winning this competition will help in some way with the project I’ve started working on.
“People may get to see the work I do who otherwise wouldn’t. The “Old Ways, Modern Days” idea I had started a couple of years ago, but I’m hoping I can now start to build up a body of work.”
