Barge is vessel for learning

LANDLUBBERS need not apply for a new floating learning venue being created by a Goole charity following a gift from a wellwisher.

The Waterways Museum is currently refitting a Humber Keel barge, to become a floating classroom which will travel around the area offering arts and crafts sessions for people with learning difficulties and cookery classes for young people.

Waterways Operations Manager, Clare Hunt, explained the Sheffield size vessel had been donated by the Waddington family, from Swinton and the refit was made possible thanks to a 100,000 grant from the funding organisation, Leader.

"Work on the barge was held up by the bad weather but it should be completed by the end of January," said Clare.

"Then it will be used for up to 40 students at a time and will be able to travel to different locations to deliver classes with our own on-board tutors."
