Biomass plant plans deferred

TESCO'S plans for a biomass combined heat and power plant have been deferred over concerns raised by Guardian Glass.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council's planning committee reviewed the application from Tesco Distribution Limited last Thursday but a decision has been postponed until further information has been submitted to resolve an issue about carbon dioxide emissions and if necessary commission independent advice; as well as resolving the local drainage board's objections.

Plans for the plant are to provide heat and electricity for the Tesco distribution centre as well as exporting surplus electricity to the national grid, with fuels used within the facility limited to renewable agricultural such as straw and crops.

It will also provide 15 employment opportunities during construction and 10 during its operation, with local farmers having the opportunity to supply biomass material.

During consultation Goole Town Council welcomed the application but Goole and Airmyn Internal Drainage Board objected on the grounds of lack of information about the removal of surface water and straw blown about obstructing drains

Guardian Glass also objected over concerns about the carbon dioxide emissions impact, air pollution effect, its location, impact on future development, and noise and impact on glass production.

Tesco say that the proposal would offset at least 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year through conventional electricity.

It also believes the use of biomass will benefit not just climate change, but reduce environmental costs, including the health implications associated with poor air quality, the damage to the natural and built environment caused by acid rain and radiation related health and safety management problems.
