Bishopwood wind farm plan refused

Selby District Council’s planning committee have refused permission to ‘Prowind’ who had plans to build a wind farm near Bishopwood.

One of the reasons given was because additional information that SDC had requested, was not supplied by Prowind.

Permission was being sought for the erection of 7 turbines on land close to Scalm Park, north of Hambleton and Thorpe Willoughby.

The turbines would have stood 125 metres tall and would have been capable of generating 17.5 megawatts — enough to provide electricity for as many as 10,500 homes.

The decision, which was unanimous, was taken at the Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday, January 9 and ends nearly four years of uncertainty.

The applications were first submitted in 2009, but problems with campaigning residents and RAF Church Fenton slowed the process.

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams backed the decision, saying: “I am pleased that Selby Council has just refused the massive Bishopwood windfarm development which would have produced little energy and blighted the lives of those living close by.

“Selby District Planners have taken the right decision. I hope that the developers now appreciate the concern and the harm that such developments do to local communities.”
