MINDLESS vandals wrecked a Goole primary school’s newest building – only weeks after the keys were handed over.

An extension at Marshlands Primary School in Old Goole was broken into on the same day that children had first begun receiving lessons in it.

The incident occurred on Monday evening – Bonfire Night. As well as the inside of the building being damaged, a van adjacent to the school was set on fire, while a forklift belonging to building contractors was also targeted.

Electrical items inside the new complex were stolen whilst children’s books and toys were burnt in what police say was an attempted arson.

Headteacher Julie Newby says that the incident has upset everyone associated with the school.

She said: “It was a malicious attack it’s really affected everyone at the school including the children, the parents and the staff.

“We’re all shocked and upset. Thankfully, the fire that had been started eventually went out so we could be talking about a much worse outcome.

“If anyone knows anything about this then we would stress to them to please get in touch with either us or the police.”

The £1.5m building is the first of three planned extensions to the school, with the others expected to be completed by April next year.

Julie added that the probable cost of repairing damage and replacing goods from the attack will be “thousands of pounds”.

Building contractors Hobson and Porter have since stepped up security at the school, with a night watchman now in place to help prevent further incidents. Humberside Police released a statement on the break-in, saying: “When officers attended it was apparent that entry had been forced to the school and a computer stolen.

“A small fire had also been started to a few pieces of paper in the building but it had burned itself out without doing any damage. Inquiries into both the burglary and the suspicious fires are ongoing.”

Any witnesses should ring 101 referring to log 813 of 05 November.
