A CARE home in Selby is under fire after watchdog the Care Quality Commission warned it is failing to protect safety and welfare of the people in its care.
CQC has issued a formal warning to Guardian Care Homes (UK) Ltd, registered provider of The Grange, Leeds Road, Selby, stating that they must make urgent improvements to standards of care or face further action. The warning follows an unannounced visit by inspectors to The Grange (below) on November 8, as part of its planned review of care services.
The regulator’s unannounced inspection found that the home was failing to comply with national standards covering care and welfare of people who use its services and it was failing to protect service users against the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines.
Inspectors looked to see whether appropriate arrangements were in place relating to obtaining medicines and found that service users did not always have an adequate supply of medication. CQC’s director Malcolm Bower-Brown said: “The law sets out national standards that everyone who uses services should be able to expect. Providers have a duty to ensure they meet these standards. This warning sends a clear and public message that Guardian Care Homes (UK) Ltd need to address these issues as a matter of urgency or face serious consequences.
“Our inspectors will return to the home in the near future and if we find that the provider is not making the required progress we won’t hesitate to use our legal powers to ensure residents are receiving the service they are entitled to expect.”
Head of care at Guardian Care Homes (UK) Mark Cloonan said Guardian Care was committed to providing the highest standards of care and quality to all the residents and added: “We accept there have been some issues surrounding the administration of medicines and we took immediate action to address these issues. We operate a very open, transparent and honest way of working and work closely with North Yorkshire County Council to address any issues. We would like to state the home was inspected in July and October 2012 and was deemed fully compliant by the Care Quality Commission.”
