SELBY Times today re-launches its Christmas Toy appeal, aimed at ensuring the most deprived children in our area still receive a festive treat.
Selby District Lions are again joining forces with the Salvation Army to help ensure that children in our area do not go without presents this Christmas.
Last year saw the appeal met by generous donations from readers, with teddies and dolls amongst the generous offerings.
Paula Haylett, Salvation Army captain said: “We got a really good response last year but what we really don’t want this year is for families to push the boat out when they really can’t afford to.
“If we can avoid that by using this appeal, then that would be brilliant. We know lots of families in the Selby area who just can’t afford to give presents to their children and given this economic climate this appeal is so important to contributing towards helping that.”
David Jones, of the Lions, also praised the generosity of the gift-givers. He said: “We were really pleased with last year’s donations and we hope to have just as many this year.
“Despite the recession, we saw a good number of presents being donated, and that includes both the quantity and quality of toys.
“Despite the tough times financially this year, hopefully we’ll see a similar story and people will donate just as generously.”
Presents should be handed into the Selby Times office at 74-76 Gowthorpe in town from 9am to 5pm weekdays until December 17. Presents should either be new or in very good condition.
