Credit union to offer not-for-profit service
by Kate Liptrot
AN impartial service to help local people carefully manage their money has been launched in Goole.
MP Ian Cawsey cut the ribbon at the opening of the Goole Credit Union Branch in Pasture Road, which aims to provide not-for-profit financial services, such as help and advice on saving and borrowing, for local people.
Run by the Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEYCU), it is a mutual organisation owned by its 6500 customer members.
Mr Cawsey said: “Credit Unions are an excellent way for people to save and to get low interest credit. They work on co-operative principles so it is run by the members for the members and can even pay an annual dividend.
“The organisers of this scheme have only one interest and that is to help local people manage their money and they give excellent impartial advice. They are not seeking to make profits and everything invested is used for the benefit of the members.”
The branch will be open three days a week from Wednesday to Friday and the setting up of the branch has been supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Government’s Financial Inclusion Fund.
John Smith, secretary of HEYCU, said: “Our official opening gives us the opportunity to meet members of the local community and explain how joining a credit union can help people to manage their money well.
“The Government is keen for community-based organisations like ours to have a greater presence in the High Street, so it is fitting that Ian Cawsey MP is coming to open our new premises, which we hope will serve the people of Goole well for many years to come.”
