Darts fans in for a treat with pro’s Drax visit
A LITTLE part of Hawaii is coming to Drax next week as part of a special darts exhibition evening.
Professional player Wayne Mardle, nicknamed ‘Hawaii 501’ due to the flashy shirts he sports while on stage, will visit the Drax Sports & Social Club on Friday, January 11, at 7.30pm.
The evening is hosted by the Snaith Darts and Dominoes League in association with the Drax club and Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.
The Dagenham thrower has recently taken a back seat from playing on the professional tour, but is still one of the most popular names on the darts circuit.
He has recently made a successful transition from the oche to the commentary box, filling in for Sky Sports as a pundit on their coverage.
Mardle has won a host of PDC titles during his career, but the major tournaments have so far eluded him.
He was runner-up at the World Matchplay, twice a semi-finalist at the Las Vegas Desert Classic and a five-times semi-finalist at the World Championships.
More recently, though, the 39-year-old has taken to the commentary box with apparent ease, winning praise for his analytical and presenting expertise.
He was recently compared with the legendary late Sid Waddell by The Times newspaper – high praise indeed for anyone with a knowledge of the sport.
He has been described as one of the most approachable and charismatic darts professionals around, and will no doubt be mingling with his fans at the Drax club to discuss his long career.
Tickets cost £10 and include a pie and pea supper.
They can be purchased directly from the club on 01757 618041 or by contacting Steve Greenwood on 01757 617418.
Places are limited, so it is advised to book early.
