Expansion plans for Goole College
MP Andrew Percy with East Riding councillor Paul Robinson, and Gary, Elaine and Anne from Goole College.
LUCKY students at Goole College will be given an education boost with plans to open a campus in under-used parts of the Goole and District Hospital estate.
The move follows a unique partnership between Hull College and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This proposed development – which still requires the formal support of the board of the hospital Trust and the College – will involve consultation between staff, users and local residents over the coming months.
The proposals include the development of provision in two phases – the first beginning in September, which would see an increase in courses in health and social care, employability skills and higher level professional qualifications.
The second phase, in September 2013, would see the College moving out of its existing buildings on Boothferry Road and transferring all provision to the Goole Hospital site.
Goole and Brigg MP Andrew Percy said: “I welcome this exciting initiative for the town which is the first link up of its sort in the country. It will offer something completely new for students and would-be students in the Goole area. By utilising space at the hospital that is not presently used for health care it helps to secure the hospital at a time of tough budgeting. Goole is moving forward and this development could be very positive for the town.”
Reacting to the news Goole town mayor Coun Keith Moore said he first became aware of this when he attended a meeting at Goole Hospital and added: “This is excellent news for Goole College and will provide it with a long term future and help to stop the drain to other colleges outside the town.
“While I have no problem regarding the proposed new building on the hospital site there was a sting in the tail when we were also advised that “under-used hospital space would also be utilised. When I asked where this was nobody could say.”
Hull College group executive director, of Organisational Development, which encompasses Goole College, Lee Probert, said: “Goole College and NLAG have recognised the potential of Goole and surrounding areas, and plan to consult on this potential investment in new community facilities.” To see individual response go to www.goole-college,co.uk website.
