Flood risk plan open to public

PLANS for managing flood risks for the next 100 years are to be revealed to the public at a drop-in session to be held in Goole.

The draft plans have been drawn up by the Environment Agency and staff will be available to discuss the issues and hear residents' views in the session at Goole Leisure Centre on Monday, March 8, from 2 to 7pm.

Flood risks in the area come from rivers that drain much of Yorkshire - the Derwent, Ouse, Aire, Don - and the Trent, which drains much of the Midlands. Each of these river systems - or catchments - has a draft Catchment Flood Management Plan (CFMP), now published for consultation.

Environment Agency consultation manager, Rachel Bennett, said: "We have drawn up these long term plans to cover the whole country.

"Each plan sets out information about the river system and takes into account the possible impact of climate change which may increase flood risk.

"We then look at what the broad options are according to the risks we have identified.

"We want people to be involved and understand what we are proposing as it will affect the area for many years to come.

"That's why we're holding this drop-in session to give people a chance to talk us, explore the issues and let us know what they think."

When the plans are finalised, following the consultation, the information in them will be used to help the Environment Agency prioritise its flood risk management work and investment.

They will also describe the type of actions that could be taken, by the Environment Agency and other organisations, to reduce future flood risks.

The drop-in will include an exhibition on the issues described in the plans and leaflets will be available to take away along with information on how to contribute views before the consultation closes on April 23.

Consultation on a CFMP for the rest of East Yorkshire will take place later in the spring.

Information on the CFMPs can be found on the Environment Agency's website at
