Freezing Antarctica fun in Burton Salmon

FREEZING fun was had by all at Burton Salmon Primary School last week as part of its term-time curriculum study of Antarctica.
Headteacher Delia Andrews and key stage two teacher Helen Ingham joined the youngsters as they made the most of the snow showers taking children outside to experience a little of the freezing conditions.
Mrs Ingham said the youngsters were also following the latest expedition of Sir Ranulph Fiennes on his blog to keep abreast of what the adventurer was doing day-to-day.
Sir Ranulph’s Coldest Journey expedition – which aims to raise millions of pounds in donations for the Seeing is Believing charity, to tackle avoidable blindness – set off in early December and will see Sir Ranulph and five other explorers attempt to become the first people to walk across Antarctica in the near permanent darkness and super low temperatures of winter.
Mrs Ingham added: “The children are learning all about the polar region through their studies. This involves art work and studying how animals and people cope with the sub-zero temperatures.”
She added: “The youngsters are really enjoying this. Key stage two children will finish their studies at the end of term with key stage one possibly carrying theirs on.
“We have also been studying past expeditions through past explorers Shackleton and Scott. The children really enjoyed their fun in the snow combined with exploration of Antarctica.”
