An action group opposing the government’s HS2 high speed rail link through Church Fenton has received council backing for its campaign.
Co-ordinator for CHF Says No To HS2 – The end of the line for HS2 – campaign group, Jo Mason, said Selby District Council and North Yorkshire County Council representatives were unconvinced of the benefits the proposed rail link would bring when they met protesters in the village last week.
She said opposition among villagers was growing and stickers proclaiming “Bin HS2 – total waste of money” and “HS2 – absolute rubbish”, had been posted on waste bins throughout the village by campaigners.
She added: “Opposition is growing. Tomorrow we will speak to SDC leader Mark Crane at a parish council meeting and we have also been invited by the council’s Labour leader Steve Shaw-Wright to give a presentation on our opposition to HS2 at a date to be arranged.”
She further added: “Two weeks ago a judicial review proclaimed that the government’s compensation package for those affected by the high speed rail link was unfair, so as to be unlawful. The government now has to go back to square one to review compensation arrangements.”
There are two fund-raisers arranged by the campaign group.
On Sunday 2-4pm, £2.50, there is an Easter trail at Sandwath Nature Reserve.
On Tuesday there is also a fund-raising curry night at Sunar Bangla, Main Street, Church Fenton – two different sittings 6.30pm and 8pm, £15.
For details on either event call Jo Mason on 01937 557353.
