A TRIO of organisations and community groups are celebrating a happy new year after the Selby Times pledged their allegiance to the respective causes once again.

Over £500 has been donated by your local, quality newspaper to groups that are a vital part of their respective areas.

Selby RUFC are one of a number of grassroots sports clubs that rely on vital funds to keep going.

Chairman Ian Wotton says the donation of advertising pitch-side boards, worth £250, is a helpful boost to the club’s coffers.

He said: “We’ve got a clubhouse and over 13 acres of land to maintain and develop.

“Every penny is precious and we have an important role to fulfil in the community.

“We’re eternally grateful for this donation.”

Another community group to be given vital funding is the ‘Selby in Bloom’ contest.

The annual contest, ran by Selby Town Council, sees crisp lawns and pruned flowers taking centre-stage and it will once again be given a £150 injection by the Selby Times.

A Town Hall spokesperson said: “STC would like to thank the Selby Times for once again supporting us.

“Last year’s event was a success despite the weather and we are hoping to continue this partnership with the Selby Times for many years.”

Also receiving a welcome boost is the annual Selby Ploughing Match, which was given a £100 windfall.

Organiser Brendan Glavin says that the continued support of the Selby Times is a shot in the arm for the contest.

He said: “The money we get is a big help and this year we’ve had a good year.

“We won quite a lot in competition but every year is a bit of a struggle financially.

“Every single donation we get is gratefully received.”
