Help for disease sufferers

RESIDENTS suffering from chronic diseases are being offered a helping hand with free support sessions.

A new support group has been set up to help people suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (C.O.P.D) an umbrella term for people with chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both.

The illness is often caused by smoking or passive smoking and people who are suffering with the condition are encouraged to attend a free open day on September 11 at The Courtyard, in Goole's Boothferry Road.

Activities Co-ordinator Anne Auld said: "These sessions will be a chance for people to meet others in similar situations.

"We would encourage people to come along.

"People can get medical help but often it's meeting others and talking about things that really helps them cope with their illness."

Anne explained that sufferers often find themselves not only struggling to breathe, but also anxious, isolated and often unable to cope financially.

And she added that those who care for someone with the condition may also benefit from support in managing the condition and are also welcome to attend.

The free session will run from 2 to 4pm and if enough people support this event it is hoped it will become a regular thing.

To book a place, please contact Anne Auld at The Courtyard on 01405 837100. Transport can be provided if required.
