Helping out the hounds

THREE Selby dog lovers are hitting the road in the hope of raising pounds for abandoned pooches.

Civil engineer Chris Janik and three colleagues are taking on a 15 mile run to raise charity cash for Hull Greyhound Rescue.

Chris, who is from Carlton, has a very special reason to be grateful to the charity – his best friend Tilly is a former resident of the rescue centre!

He said: “My wife is a big dog lover and she finally persuaded me that we should get a dog and we thought a greyhound would suit us.

“When we got Tilly we met the people at the centre and we were very impressed by the fantastic work they do.”

“It is an independent rescue centre and is run by dedicated volunteers and greyhound owners. Many of the greyhounds, whippets and lurchers that the rescue help, have either been gifted in by their owners or have been found abandoned through no fault of their own.

“A no destruction policy is in place, which means that no dog that the rescue helps, will be put to sleep except on health grounds when there is no other option. “We start the run at Selby Abbey at 10am and are running to Cliffords Tower in York. We are running along the cycle track with the route being a total of 15.5 miles. I’ve organised the event with a view to starting it as an annual event in the coming years and getting more competitors in the future.”
